It was important for us to provide practical career related work experiences for students and to assist them in documenting and validating their skills both technical and what are generally referred to as soft skills. We were also looking for a way for students to access resources to develop or enhance skills required by employers that were not a part of the academic program. We worked with SkillNet and university faculty to identify a group of students who we thought could be successful in the quickly growing independent contractor sector. DeVry has mostly tech students and most of the independent contractor positions are in technical areas. Skillnet developed for us a proprietary database/platform for our participating students. Through the platform they could access to a number of job boards and bid on local area opportunities. It quickly became apparent that students needed additional support and training so a number of workshops and training sessions were developed. Though the database students could talk to each other about their challenges and successes, arrange to work together and access information on where to get additional skills. Mike Kritzman and his team made adjustments daily as we refined the systems and learned more about our students needs in this new arena.
